Adolescent Gynecology

PROMOTING WOMEN'S HEALTH AT EVERY STAGE

Adolescent gynecology is a specialized branch of obstetrics and gynecology that focuses on providing comprehensive care to female patients from birth through young adulthood. This subspecialty recognizes the unique needs of children and adolescents, addressing a wide range of gynecological concerns, including malformations, tumors, dysfunctions, structural irregularities, and abnormalities that may arise during puberty.

The importance of adolescent gynecology lies in its ability to foster a trusting relationship between young patients and their healthcare providers. By establishing a comfortable and confidential environment, adolescent gynecologists can help girls and young women navigate the physical and emotional changes they experience during this critical stage of development. This includes discussing sensitive topics such as menstruation, sexual health, and contraception, as well as providing guidance and support for various menstrual issues, such as pain, heavy bleeding, and irregular periods.

The Role of Adolescent Gynecology Exams:

Adolescent gynecology exams are essential for ensuring the health and proper function of a young woman's reproductive system, including the ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes. These exams are typically performed as part of a yearly check-up for teenagers and young adults, but may be recommended more frequently if specified by a physician.

During the exam, the doctor will discuss the patient's menstrual cycle, including its onset and regularity, as this information can provide valuable insights into overall health. While many young girls may be apprehensive about internal exams, it is important to note that internal gynecological exams are not recommended until age 21, unless specifically ordered by a physician. Around this age, women also begin receiving Pap tests to screen for changes in cervical tissue health.

Benefits of Seeing an Adolescent Gynecologist:

  • Assessment of reproductive organ health and function
  • Evaluation and treatment of vaginal discharge or odor
  • Guidance and support for menstrual concerns
  • Counseling about physical development and sexual activity
  • Education and advice regarding contraception options
